In a previous blog post, we discussed “5 Steps for Jump-Starting Your Career in the New Year.” To review, those steps were as follows:

  1. Talk with your supervisor.
  2. Focus on results.
  3. Invest in yourself.
  4. Increase your networking efforts.

Now that we’ve started 2022, this is still an opportune time to position yourself for career growth. A New Year means a fresh start, a new beginning, and the opportunity to do the things necessary to continue boosting your career.

Of the five steps listed above, only one of them (#5) deals directly with seeking a new employment opportunity. Let’s face it: sometimes the only way to move forward professionally is to do so with another employer.

That’s why in this blog post, we’re going to discuss strategies that deal with what to do once you’ve decided to seek a new opportunity. Below are three targeted strategies for growing your career in 2022:

#1—Take advantage of the fact that it’s a candidates’ market.

When it’s a candidates’ market, it means that talent is in demand, including at your current employer. So if you’ve decided that “seeking greener pastures” is the course you’d like to take, then you’ll definitely have leverage.

The best time to look for a better job is when you already have a good job. Why is that? Because you’ll be moving from a position of strength, as opposed to a position of weakness. When you’re not employed and you’re looking for a job, you’re less picky and more likely to take a position with a company about which you’re not really excited.

#2—Cast a wide net with your job search.

To do this, it’s always a good idea to solicit the input and advice of other people you trust. This includes family members, colleagues, mentors, co-workers, etc. Ask anybody whose opinion you truly respect.
