Today is July 4, also known as the Fourth of July. This is, of course, a national holiday. However, what some people may not realize is that the official name of the holiday is Independence Day.
According to Wikipedia, Independence Day “is a federal holiday in the United States commemorating the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776.” So why is today a great time to think about your career?
Because it’s a great time to think about your career in terms of independence and freedom. Specifically, you should be asking yourself some questions about your current employment situation.
These questions include the following:
- Do I have the freedom to pursue educational and training opportunities?
- Do I have the freedom to pursue advancement within the organization?
- Do I have the freedom to talk frankly with my boss or supervisor about my employment with the company and my career?
- Do I have the freedom and flexibility to complete tasks and finish projects in the manner in which I see fit?
What’s the point of all of these questions? Simple: to gauge how much freedom you have—or don’t have—in your current employment situation. Freedom is often a prerequisite for satisfaction when it comes to your job. If you don’t have it, then chances are good that you’re not satisfied.
We are currently in the midst of a recovering economy and a candidates’ market. In a candidates’ market, all candidates have more employment opportunities. Not only that, but the best candidates typically have access to the most opportunities and the best ones.
This means if you’re not experiencing the type of freedom that you’d like to experience and you’re not as satisfied as you would like to be with your current employment situation, there are plenty of opportunities in the marketplace. You have options.
And even if you are somewhat satisfied and even content with your present job, it would benefit you to explore what the market has to offer. Since we’re in a candidates’ market, Engineering and Information Technology employers are very interested in finding and hiring qualified candidates. That’s because there is currently a lack of such candidates in the marketplace.
Since there is a lack of such candidates, employers are willing to invest heavily in these candidates once they find them. That means more for you in the way of starting salary, benefits, and other perks.
Yes, you may be content with your current job, but there could be a better opportunity out there. That opportunity could give you more freedom and more satisfaction.
