Are you having trouble finding the best candidates? Are you having trouble hiring the best candidates once you’ve found them?
If you answered “yes” to either of these questions, then you’re probably wondering what you’re doing wrong. The answer might be so simple, yet so easy to overlook: perhaps you’re not treating the best candidates . . . like the best candidates.
Once you’ve identified a “best candidate” or “A-level player” (or maybe even more than one), regardless of how their resume came across your desk, there are a number of things you should do in your attempts to land the best possible hire for your open position:
#1—Go out of your way to express your interest.
You can’t treat the best candidates like other candidates. Let them know immediately that you’re interested in them. Even if a recruiter has found this candidate and has presented them to you, the candidate wants to gauge your level of interest, not the recruiter’s.
#2—Keep the lines of communication open.
If the candidate doesn’t receive information from you on a consistent basis, then they’re going to assume that you no longer have interest in them. Remember, the very best candidates don’t chase companies. Companies chase them.
#3—Keep the candidate engaged in the interview and hiring process.
The impression that the candidate receives of your company during the interview process is crucial, since they’re in the midst of deciding whether or not they’d like to work for you. If that impression is a negative one . . .
#4—Don’t delay when it’s time to make a decision.
The best candidates receive multiple offers, and they’re receiving them right now. They’re not going to wait for you to make up your mind. If your competition makes an offer before you do, they’re going to accept that offer. You’ll feel like you were left at the altar . . . even though you never officially proposed.
Do you have a system in place to attract, engage, and hire the very best candidates in the marketplace? If not, which elements are missing? What needs to be addressed? No matter the specifics of your hiring process, remember the most important rule: always treat the best candidates . . . like they’re the best candidates.
That’s the first step to ensuring that they decide to work for YOU.
