There is definitely a lot to be afraid of these days.

We can start with the COVID-19 pandemic, which has spread around the world in a relatively short amount of time, resulting in millions of infections and hundreds of thousands of deaths.

Then there is what might turn out to be a global recession. The pandemic has negatively affected not only the United States economy, but also the economy of just about every other country in the world.

That, of course, has resulted in mass layoffs and high unemployment numbers. As of the writing of this blog post, those numbers included a National Unemployment Rate of 14.7% and over 36 million people filing for unemployment benefits during the past six weeks.

So, yes . . . there’s a lot to be afraid of. However, allowing fear to dictate your decisions and rule your behavior is NOT a recipe for success. And that applies to any type of market, including both the candidate-driven market that we were experiencing until just recently and the recessionary market that we’re battling right now.

By and large, people do not make good decisions when those decisions are based on fear. They may seem like they’re good decisions in the short term, but that is rarely the case in the long run. (In fact, sometimes the decisions aren’t much good in the short term, either.)

The fact of the matter is that there IS opportunity in the midst of fear and uncertainty. And that includes the fear and uncertainty that surrounds the current pandemic.

For employers, that opportunity takes the form of top talent, superstar candidates who were available prior to the pandemic and are still available.

For job seekers and job candidates, that opportunity takes multiple forms, including new and exciting positions with forward-thinking organizations, as well as the chance to work remotely and/or with additional schedule flexibility.

So while there is definitely a lot to be afraid of these days, do NOT focus on the fear. Instead, focus on the opportunities that exist in the midst of the fear and uncertainty.

When you do so, you give yourself an advantage over your competition, who is more than likely focusing on the fear and uncertainty of the situation.
